Sport is integrated into the PDHPE program at LGHS. In Stage 4 (Years 7 and 8) students undertake two double periods of physical activity that aims to develop skill and physical fitness in team games. In the Year 8 year there is a greater focus on dance and gymnastics.
In Stage 5 (Years 9 and 10) students undertake whole year group sport in which students have choices in the activities that they would like to participate in as well as round robin competitions to help develop team work and the values of fair play.
Sport is seen as an important aspect of schooling as it develops:
- physical skill
- fitness
- lifelong physical activity behaviours
- fair play
- team work
Students have many opportunities to be involved in sporting teams and sporting events outside of the PDHPE program. The school currently enters teams in:
- basketball, both junior and open teams
- cricket
- netball, junior and open teams
- rugby union
- soccer, junior and open teams
- softball
- tennis
- touch football
- volleyball
All students have the opportunity to trial and if successful in gaining selection, they will represent LGHS in the NSW Knockout competition.
Students who are skilled and involved in sport outside of school also have the opportunity to trial for the Edmondson Zone Teams in touch football (junior and open teams), netball, soccer, basket ball and volleyball. If successful in these selections they will compete at SSW events.
All students are expected to attend and participate in our school swimming, cross country and athletics carnivals. Students who gain selection for our school team will compete at the Edmondson Zone carnivals and have the opportunity to progress to regional and state levels of competition. Stage 6 students are able to count the carnivals as part of the 36 hours of sport for their "HSC Passport to Graduation".
Students in Stage 4 participate in "Gala Days" with other Edmondson Zone schools. Students choose to participate in soccer, netball, basketball, cricket, newcombeball or T-Ball (Year 7), softball (Year 8) and will undertake a round robin competition in a friendly competitive environment.
The school has also been involved with interschool Gala Days in Oz Tag and Netball, both of which have helped develop skill, promoted teamwork and allowed students to participate in competitions for sports they enjoy.
