STEAMPUNK GIRLS PILOT PROJECT 2017

 SPG Header1

Day 1 and 2: CO-Design Workshop (2016) Ms Dokmanovic, Careers Advisor initiated this program
At UTS we learnt about STEAM and how it can be incorporated into every day life. 'The Data Arena' that we were lucky enough to view is a great example of what STEAM can accomplish. The arena incorporates the STEAM subjects to design a room that present data in an innovative and practical manner. We met a fashion designer later on in the day who combined mathematics with arts, another great example of how STEAM can be affiliated with every day life. During this project, we were taught how to note take, be active listeners, interview, empathise and brainstorm ideas.

Day 3:
STEAMPUNK GIRLS PROJECT LAUNCH - UTS HATCHERY 1 MAY 2017 4-7pm
A panel was under way at the UTS Hatchery where Diana Salim would soon make her debut to fame! Just kidding. The panel consisted of one representative from each school that had participated in the making of the project and they were interviewed and asked a series of questions in front of a great audience with many important people who contributed to the making of STEAMpunk Girls. We were later interviewed by a local radio station for more details of what we did over the two days workshop, our opinions and words of advice about the program."GO FOR IT" -  Amal Al-Najam, Year 11

STEAMPUNK Girls in The LAB, UTS SPG Header

STEAMpunk Girls is an educational program that advocates for young women (ages 12 to 16) to challenge why STEAM is important for careers of the future. This program exposes students to the science, technology, engineering, arts and maths (STEAM) industries and female role models working with and across these fields. STEAMpunk Girls provides a safe and experimental environment that promotes a learn by doing mindset and encourages young women to apply interdisciplinary approaches to solving real world issues. Our point of difference is the inclusion of entrepreneurial methods as the cornerstone of the program. STEAMpunk Girls blends innovative methods with entrepreneurship, contextualising education within real world problems and empowering students to develop and execute their own ideas and solutions.

Pilot Program Objectives

1. The pilot will be an exploratory program to test out content and methods around STEAM education

2. To find out how young women apply STEAM education to complex problem solving

3. To test out how to integrate PBL across different disciplines

Selected Year 8 students will collaborate and co-create with students from Bankstown Girls' High School (Year 9), Killarney Heights High School (Year 10) and Loretto College, Kiribilli (Year 10). The topic is FUTURE EARTH. Research will be conducted and will inform schools across Australia about best practice for learning and teaching STEAM for girls.

This in-depth and sustained research project will span many sections and will require commitment from students and teachers to work together with UTS mentors and specialists from Powerhouse Museum.
